Deep borehole construction for ground source heat pump systems, district heating and renewable energy schemes. Proven deep capability — 160m and beyond — across the UK.
Tapping Into the Earth's
Natural Energy
Geothermal drilling involves constructing deep boreholes into the ground to access the stable thermal energy stored in the earth. The ground below a depth of around 15 metres maintains a near-constant temperature year-round — typically between 10°C and 13°C in the UK — making it an efficient and reliable source of renewable heating and cooling energy.
GeoPrime Solutions construct geothermal boreholes for ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems, district heating networks and other renewable energy schemes. We have drilled to depths of 160m and beyond on geothermal projects, giving us proven capability for both shallow and deep borehole programmes.
Once drilled, a closed-loop ground heat exchanger is installed in the borehole — typically a U-tube or coaxial pipe — and the borehole is grouted to ensure good thermal contact with the surrounding ground. The ground loop is then connected to a heat pump, which extracts heat from the ground for space heating and hot water in winter, and can reject heat back into the ground for cooling in summer.
The number and depth of boreholes required depends on the building's heating and cooling load and the thermal properties of the ground. A thermal response test (TRT) can be carried out to accurately characterise the ground's thermal conductivity at your site, enabling accurate borehole field design.
