About This Service

Fast, Versatile Ground
Investigation to 10m

Window sampling — also known as windowless sampling — is carried out by tracked percussive rigs. The technique uses a steel tube with a plastic liner to recover soil samples from the ground, providing continuous undisturbed or disturbed samples depending on the liner used.

GeoPrime Solutions' window sampling rigs have the facility to carry out SPT and CPT tests alongside the sampling programme, providing additional in-situ data to complement the sample record. This makes window sampling a highly versatile and cost-effective investigation method.

Depths of up to 10m below ground level can be achieved depending on soil type and ground conditions. The tracked rig is highly manoeuvrable and can access sites where larger cable percussive rigs cannot operate.

Window sampling is particularly well suited to contaminated land investigations, where the continuous sample recovery provides a clear picture of contamination distribution at depth. It is also widely used for the installation of ground gas and groundwater monitoring wells.

Suitable For
  • Contaminated land investigation
  • Phase 2 environmental site assessments
  • Ground gas monitoring well installation
  • Groundwater monitoring wells
  • Shallow geotechnical investigations
  • SPT & CPT testing
  • Restricted access sites
  • Dynamic probing programmes
HOW
The Process

How Window Sampling Works

01
Rig Positioning
The tracked rig is positioned over the agreed sampling location. Its compact footprint allows access to sites with restricted vehicular access.
02
Percussive Driving
The steel window sample tube is driven into the ground percussively. The plastic liner inside the tube retains the soil sample as the tube advances.
03
Sample Recovery
The tube is withdrawn and the plastic liner containing the sample is extracted, sealed and labelled for logging and laboratory testing. In-situ SPT or CPT tests are carried out at specified depths.
04
Completion
On completion, the borehole is either backfilled or completed as a monitoring well with perforated casing. All samples are logged and dispatched for analysis.
Applications

Where We Use
This Method

Contaminated Land
Phase 2 ESAs requiring detailed sampling at depth to characterise contamination distribution.
Groundwater Monitoring
Installation of ground gas and groundwater monitoring wells for ongoing environmental monitoring programmes.
Shallow Geotechnical
Cost-effective shallow investigations for small developments, housing and infrastructure projects.
Industrial Sites
Brownfield and industrial land investigation where contamination assessment is required prior to development.
Dynamic Probing
Rapid assessment of ground strength and consistency across a site using dynamic probing alongside sampling.
Restricted Access
Sites with limited access where larger cable percussive rigs cannot operate — gardens, car parks, basements.

Tracked rigs, qualified drillers, calibrated equipment — deployed wherever you need us across the UK.

Why Choose Us

Why GeoPrime for
Window Sampling

Fast Mobilisation
Tracked rigs are quick to mobilise and set up. We work to your programme and can often accommodate urgent requirements at short notice.
Restricted Access
Our tracked rigs can access sites that larger equipment cannot — narrow sites, gardens, car parks, basements and areas with low headroom.
Sample Quality
The plastic liner system ensures samples are properly retained and protected during recovery. All samples are correctly logged, sealed and labelled for laboratory dispatch.
Common Questions

Frequently Asked
Questions

Window sampling is carried out by tracked percussive rigs. It uses a steel tube with a plastic liner to recover soil samples to depths of up to 10m below ground level, depending on soil type.
Window sampling is used for contaminated land investigation, geotechnical investigations, and the installation of ground gas and groundwater monitoring wells. It can also be used to carry out SPT and CPT tests.
Dynamic probing is an in-situ test carried out alongside window sampling to assess the relative density and strength of soils. A probe is driven into the ground by repeated hammer blows, and the number of blows per 100mm penetration is recorded.
Window sampling can typically reach depths of up to 10m below ground level, depending on soil type and ground conditions.
Yes. Window sampling rigs are commonly used to install ground gas and groundwater monitoring wells. The borehole can be completed with perforated monitoring well casing on completion of sampling.
